1 pm: Kids Tap/Jazz Combo: This class will be a special class just for kids! In class kids will learn an intro to tap and jazz dance movements. Tap shoes are highly recommended but are not necessary. *It’s very difficult to hear the sounds with normal shoes.
230 pm Beginner Tap - Tap is an American art form of dance characterized by using the feet as an instrument. Generally done in tap shoes, percussive rhythms are created by striking the floor. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the Jazz tradition. In this class, dancers will learn the basics of tap dance and a short routine utilizing all the skills learned.
330 pm Tap Shim Shams (Yep Plural!) Learn the original Shim Sham created by Leonard Reed & Willie Bryant along with other Shim Sham dances too! Tap dancers around the world regard the shim sham as their national anthem. See how this routine inspired the lindy hop version. Learn the similarities, differences, and history while adding another version of the shim sham to your repertoire.
5 PM Vernacular Jazz class - Vernacular (authentic) Jazz Dance is a general term that encompasses a LONG list of dances and moves that include both partner and solo dancing. We think of it as dances that have their roots in African American Jazz Dances done to jazz music from the late 1800s to beyond. These dances include the Lindy Hop, Tap, Charleston, Black Bottom, Cakewalk etc.
This class is a theory/interactive class where dancers learn how music is constructed and how it applies to vernacular jazz dance and lindy. Â Dancers will learn to improvise musically to various breaks in music, horn sections, and learn how to anticipate the next section of a song without knowing the song. Â If you've ever wanted to know how to improve your musicality in solo jazz or lindy, this is the class for you.
