Air Ward - Where we focus on aerials! Nevermind the dance steps; show me the air steps!
Who? If possible, bring your own partner. When the classes begin, it may be possible to match up extra leads and follows. Some rotation of partners may happen. Actual aerials will be done ONLY with assigned partners or people who demonstrate good technique. Participants need NOT be intermediate or advanced dancers; beginners are welcome. However, having some athletic or active background will be helpful. You must be comfortable with your physical shape and willing to work with and trust other people for best results.
As a part of the class you may be asked to spot other people to keep them safe while they experiment with new moves. Your duty is to prevent them from hitting the ground; doing this properly MIGHT put you at risk, too, as you may get inadvertently knocked.
Please wear simple and flexible clothing. Athletic shoes recommended.
NOTE: Just like with dancing, there are basics that apply to aerials, framework, connection, timing, etc. Knowing, practicing and applying these fundamental concepts will improve ALL of your air steps and give you a solid basis for learning more. The first half of the class will introduce these concepts and teach some simple aerial exercises to practice them. EVERYONE will be able to successfully execute these moves.
1. Aerials 101 - (open to everyone - partner not required - though encouraged) This class will review the fundamentals of aerials systematically while offering simple techniques and exercises that will benefit everyone wanting to do clean air steps. Concepts like, connection, timing, directional energy, framework, points of contact, balanced support and light landings might be covered. Both beginners and advanced dancers will find value in taking this class.
2. Intermediate Air Steps - (participants should come with a partner and have some simple aerials experience. An athletic background, comfort working with partners and both confidence and trust in your partner will be helpful.) Several aerial moves will be covered - at least one will be an inverted move where one partner is upside down for part of the move.
3. Tricks that get "Oooooo's" - (open to all - ideally, bring your own partner, but singles accommodated also) This class will teach several of those eye-catching moves that draw attention - even on a crowded floor. Expect to cover tricks that might include special dips, dramatic drops, clever partner work and character moves.
4. Advanced Air - (MUST have a trusted partner for this class - strong athletic background, partnership experience and/or high tolerance for risk is encouraged. Extensive dance experience NOT necessary.) Class size may be limited. As this class is scheduled later in the weekend, you may ask Nathalie or Kerry about whether this class would be suitable for you. This class will focus on one or two more challenging aerial moves. Be ready to either FLY or THROW and pray for high ceilings!
5. Human Stacking - An opportunity to PLAY as adults. We'll be creating basic formations, balance poses and stacking up on top of each other. Everyone is welcome in this class. HOWEVER, your physical ability, i.e. balance, strength, flexibility, partnering will determine how much of the class you'll be able to fully experience. This is one of the most popular classes I teach. Make sure you bring your camera!
